Writing these gift columns every Thursday really shows how fast the weeks fly by! This post is all about the O.P.C. in our lives: Other People’s Children we love to spoil!
If you’re looking for this year’s list of hot toys, or dangerous toys, you’ll be disappointed. These are just some of the items that l wish I could play with, or buy someone. Depending on the age of your nieces, nephews, godchildren or kids of friends and neighbors, you might find something here that’s different, and just perfect. Let us know if you do! Otherwise, a gift card from iTunes works for everyone, even before they know what one is.
Saw these Crocheted Honey Bear Headphones in a magazine. Why can’t she be stylin’ while she’s jammin’? Also available in yellow, teal, gray, and black. $39.99
Are there kids still falling in love with Harry Potter for the first time? Gotta be. Those young readers (or movie watchers) might appreciate the gift of their very own Snowy Owl. Standing 16″ tall, this isn’t supposed to be Harry’s owl Hedgwig, (you can easily find those, and at a lower price). This owl belongs to whoever it’s gifted to. $78.00
No secret: little kids LOVE tablet computers. Click around iTunes — those kiddie apps aren’t for the adults who own the iPad. Enter LeapFrog Pad 2. Not cheap, but your Momfriends may thank you royally. There’s a 4 GB memory and 1.5 MB download capacity.AND… built-in front and back camera, video recorder and microphone.
On second thought, kids with video recording capacity could be tricky! Of course, it’s ready for dropping, banging into things and whatever else a child age 3-9 might do to it. $99.00
I had my own bad experience with paint spills on my grandmother’s carpet. Even the dirty rinsewater from watercolors can cause damage. Maybe that’s why I love the ads for Crayola Color Wonder. Watch the video and you’ll see why. Inks and paints are clear and only show up on the special paper. Write on the walls all you want. Well, you know what I mean. Lots of products to choose from, $9.99 and up. (Runner-Up: AquaDoodle Mat for toddlers. $19.99)
Back to the readers… If he or she loved The Hunger Games trilogy, honor that passion with a Mockingjay Pin. This one might be good for an adult Katniss, too, and it’s only $12.99. The books are a great gift, too. I know a 10-year-old who just plowed right through them. So did I, for that matter.
Girls age 3 to 9 or so may not want to fall asleep without snuggling up to the Doll Party Pillow. When they wake up, they’ll want it, too. Four felt dolls, clothes and accessories stick to an 18″ square pillow and get stashed in a pocket on the reverse side. Embroider her name if you choose. $59.95
The Hot Wheels Terrain Twister is a remote control vehicle that maneuvers across any surface with corkscrew treads instead of tires. Totally raceable if need be. $74.99
