Childless and childfree women come in lots of shapes and sizes. We are all colors, all cultures, and all ages. As much as we have in common, we are also very different, and we define ourselves without the label of “Mom.” And if you’re not a Mom, who are you?
The return of this regular series by TheNotMom writer and childfree blogger Laura M. LaVoie features interviews with the women who will be presenting at The NotMom Summit on October 6 and 7, 2017.
Meet Laurie Lisle at the NotMom Summit session, How to Tell Your Story (Even If It’s Just For You) on Friday, October 6, 2017. The panel discussion includes Airial Dandridge and Karen Peterson.
Laura says: Laurie Lisle writes mostly about the lives of American women, including her own. In addition to Without Child: Challenging the Stigma of Childlessness, she has written two biographies about female artists — the best-selling Portrait of an Artist: A Biography of Georgia O’Keeffe, and Louise Nevelson: A Passionate Life. She is also the author of Four Tenths of an Acre: Reflections on a Gardening Life and Westover: Giving Girls a Place of Their Own.
When asked about the Summit, Laurie responded:
“I am looking forward to The NotMom Summit because I am eager to talk with other childfree women about what I discovered while researching and writing Without Child.
Beginning with the inner journey every woman faces before finally deciding or realizing she will not bear children, the book explores her relationship to her body and to her femininity, to men and to mothers, to achievement and to aging. It also weaves materials from the past with my own story–about being childless by both chance and choice–to show that women without children are part of an honorable but forgotten tradition.”
