At dinner the other night, a friend “Anika” shared the unsolicited story of a neighbor who recently installed an in-ground pool, deck and gazebo in her back yard. She estimated that surely more than $75,000 had been invested in the project, then lowered her voice and took on a tone reserved for the actively-dying:
“She couldn’t have kids. The pool, all of it, is for her nieces and nephews and kids around the neighborhood. She just loves to be around kids.”
I swear I could see a thought balloon in the air with the unspoken closer, ”Poor thing.”
Of course, chances are good that if the neighbor did have children, she couldn’t afford the pool. And, Anika has no idea what’s happening poolside when the little ones are gone.
I’m just sayin’.
