You may not have 31 minutes to spare to watch the video below, but try. It’s a deep discussion by Huffington Post Live about where, and why child-free women earn more than men. As women everywhere fight for pay equity, it’s NotMoms who are already scoring big.
Through the magic of the Internet and Skype, the show includes real-time interviews with Warren Farrell, author of Why Men Earn More: the Startling Truth Behind the Pay Gap, Amanda Pouchot, an “expert” on Gen Y career women, Arianne Hegewisch from the Institute for Women Policy & Research in Washington, D.C., Michele Lieber, Chair, National Committee on Pay Equity, and more.
The piece follows up on a December 2012 article in The Atlantic with this headline: the Four Rich Countries Where Women Out-Earn Men (With 1 Huge Caveat).
That caveat (Spoiler Alert) is that the women have no children. The four countries are, in order: Ireland, Australia, Luxembourg and The Netherlands.
That said, a big takeaway for me after watching this was the fact that American women who never married and never had kids have outearned their male counterparts for the last 17 years.
See? I told you it was worth watching.
