When I started this blog, I knew there were thousands of NotMoms out there, but I was stunned to find a study by Pew Research Center released in June 2010. Here’s the lead:
“Nearly one-in-five American women ends her childbearing years without having borne a child, compared with one-in-ten in the 1970s. While childlessness has risen for all racial and ethnic groups, and most education levels, it has fallen over the past decade for women with advanced degrees.”
I’ll be sharing more factoids from this groundbreaking report over several posts, but it reveals one truth that every NotMom needs to know: “public attitudes toward childlessness have become more accepting.” When asked if people without children “lead empty lives,” in 1988, only 39% of those polled disagreed with the statement. In a 2002 survey, almost 60% of respondents disagreed.
Now that’s progress.
