Actress, writer, producer/director and Lena Dunham appears to be a very free soul, on-screen and off, comfortable with nudity and demonstrating truths that can be disturbingly real. Her showcase, HBO’s Girls, is a peek inside her head. It might be just a little twisty in there, but there’s also good stuff that women need to hear, including the fact that the ones wearing sizes larger than zero Will Not Be Ignored.
In October, Ms. Dunham, 27, created new buzz with an Instagram of her friend Sarah Sophie Flicker…who happens to be nursing her infant son (above). After inserting a daisy to cover “offensive” areas, Ms. Dunham captioned the shot:
“My @sarahsophief feeding the brand new Dusty. I made the flower crown and she added the flower censor. Wish she didn’t have to cuz the nipple is dope. Instagram, get down with the nipple.”
Young moms and other online lactivists (yes, that’s a word) seem to appreciate celebs, childless or not, who draw attention to social sites that remove posts of baby on booby. Sites like Facebook…which owns Instagram. There’s data from 2010 suggesting that 57% of Americans disapprove of public breastfeeding, so its advocates need all the help they can get.
Personally, I think Ms. Dunham has a point, if her point is that nipples and breastfeeding kinda go together. And in that context, what’s the problem?
It can be risky, sometimes, for NotMoms to share their opinions about aspects of pregnancy and Momhood they haven’t experienced. That finger-pointing thing again. I’m unsure if Lena Dunham will ever be a mother or not, but she does know that she doesn’t have to nurse a child to see beauty in the act. It made no sense to keep that knowledge to herself.
I like her for that. A lot.
