When The World reported in 2004 that Oprah Winfrey was turning 50, there were weeks of associated headlines around her five days of partying and themes of “What does does this mean for women?” and “Fifty is better than you think.” Oprah turns 60 in 2014. OMG.
Meanwhile, NotMom Cameron Diaz seems to be everywhere pushing healthy behaviors and her book, The Body Book: The Law of Hunger, the Science of Strength, and Other Ways to Love Your Amazing Body. Ms. Diaz is 41. She’s loving her 40’s, and like the others, she wants to be an enthusiastic comfort for any woman anxious about her next birthday.
So. Do you feel comforted?
Oprah is not much older than I am, and I confess that I thought I was handling the onset of 50 pretty well on my own. But, Oprah still had her weekday TV show at 50, and she devoted show after show to different aspects of aging…and thriving. It rubbed off on me. (thank you, O.)
Clearly, I’m among the last generations of women who can remember family members dreading, then hating their age and rarely confessing to it. Housewives (who really were at home all day) wore short-sleeved “housecoats”, boring day-dresses and a little dazzle on Sundays and holidays. High-heels after a certain age (AKA 50) were frowned upon except for singers and movie stars.
Now that all that’s gone, it’s a good, good thing for us all.
P.S. Betty White, also a NotMom, celebrated her 92nd birthday on January 17, 2014!
