Officially, June 21 is the first day of summer, but we all know it arrived with the Memorial Day flags. Can’t you feel that ‘New Year’s’ kind of vibe in the air? Everybody sketching out what they hope to do this summer. Where they want to go. Dreaming about what’s ahead.
We’re almost six months into 2013. Smart businessfolk use this time to review, assess and revise their plans. It makes me wonder, have you forgotten your One Little Word?
The first week of 2013, I shared an idea by professional scrapbook designer Ali Edwards to start the new year focused on a single word that sums up personal aspirations. She chose “open”, and she writes about her process:
” A word that I can focus on, mediate on, and reflect upon as I go about my daily life…You live with it. You invite it into your life. You let it speak to you. You might even follow where it leads. There are so many possibilities.”
Six months later, do you still think of the word you chose back in January? Does it still reset your brain?
I remember my word, and it does ‘put my mind right’, especially on blue days. But, I confess that I cheat.
My word was “star.” Out of the shadows. Self-luminous. Celestial. The dictionary reminded me that a star can also be an asterisk. I love that, too. An asterisk is not an afterthought. An asterisk hints at depth: more information, more explanation, just…more.
Soon after that post, a package arrived with a surprise gift from a friend. It’s the beautiful, blinged-out star-shaped pin in the photo above. Three inches wide, it’s heavy, too. Instead of wearing it, I keep it at the base of my monitor. If I’m at the computer (which is ALL the time), it’s in my line of vision. And it helps.
There may be a way for you to have a little cheat, too. For Ali’s word – ‘open’, a search engine will find the perfect image of an open door. What’s the visual of your word? Print it out. Position it well. Done!
Best wishes for the 2013 you want.
