The more I learn about women without children, the more I begin to comprehend the diversity within our ranks. For every woman who’s proud of her childfree choice, there’s another who struggles with recurring grief over the loss of a never-was child.
No matter how the loss arrives, grief is grief. Whether you’re missing a loved one you touched or one you only dreamed of, day-shattering, pull-the-car-to-the-side-of-the-road grief can be triggered by random sights, sounds, smells and tastes. For some NotMoms, that includes trick-or-treating.
For actively grieving NotMoms, Halloween —at least, the itty-bitty kiddies in costume part of it — can be schizophrenic torture. Such an abundance of adorableness can lead to tears, or at least a glass of wine.
No pity party here…just acknowledgement and hugs if you need ‘em.
