Well, of COURSE we didn’t forget the animals! So much to say that they get their own post. Besides, almost 75% of our readers own and love a pet. And cat owners beat out dogs, 61% to 54%. Fish, birds and reptiles get a little love among this readership, too (6%, 5% and 4%, respectively). In a much less refined “study”, the right margin Popping the Question poll, 75% of respondents will buy their pet a gift for Christmas.
No surprise that NotMoms tend to be pet people, but studies show that over a third of Americans purchase holiday gifts for their pet. Before you go shopping for the adorable critter in your life, or a friend’s, be aware of this annual campaign by the ASPCA against buying anything sold in stores that sell puppies. Needless to say, don’t buy a puppy from there, either.
Just don’t think the ASPCA is that serious all the time. They sell this DJ Cat Scratching Pad that will add kitty cool to any room or apartment. I’m guessing it’d be a super hit with a kitten! ($39.99) Of course, purchases from ASPCA help to support the organization’s mission to fight cruelty to animals, so even if you buy a $5.99 Five-Piece Doggie Gift Set, you’ll do some good.
For less than $10, try making your own chew toy. Soak a rope in chicken broth, then freeze it. Ta-da.
For a whole lot more than $10, my favorite Big Ticket idea is the Dogtek Eyenimal Digital Videocam. Clip it to your pet’s collar and 4GB with 2-1/2 hours recording time will give a 4-legged perspective of the world. And for $99.95, try the Eyenimal Cam for Cats with Built-In Night Vision. You might see your cute little fluff ball turn into Ali.
Perhaps I have a wicked streak. I have visions of a family nestled by the fireplace putting down bets on how long it will take the dog to totally destroy his very own Christmas Squirrel. Soft and squeaky, it doesn’t have a chance. ($11.60) If you’re the more peaceful type, a good quality Retractable Belt Leash in a hot color is sure to be appreciated by any dog owner.
What to get the ladies who don’t own a pet but are definitely pet-friendly? Consider an outdoor bird feeder to attract whoever is flying by. As bird feeders go, traditional can be quite stylish in copper, or you can Google for styles that resemble houses or barns, or…Buddha. Maybe an electronic fish that swims in real water and runs on batteries or USB?
Researching this post, I confirmed what I’d suspected for years – there’s much better stuff out there for pets than the cheesy red mesh “stockings” for pets at the checkout.
