Reader suggestions for our list of prominent women without children arrive every few weeks or so. New names and faces get extra love at the top of the Famous NotMoms page, and sometimes wind up in a full post. If the nomination introduces me to a woman I’d never heard of, such as Portuguese singer Amalia Rodrigues, or sparks another type of flame, a post is guaranteed. Like today.
Big thanks to Anita A., who recently sent the names of actresses Eva Longoria and Lucy Liu. After cheering Ms. Longoria in an October 2013 post for earning a Masters degree in Chicano studies, I thought she’d already been put on the Famous list. Oops.
At age 38, when smart-and-sexy Eva talked about kids that Fall, she said:
“I’m not one of those women that’s like, ‘Oh, I must procreate!’ I don’t think if I’m 50 and single – I’m not going to go and [have a baby] by myself.”
Doesn’t that make this screamer of a headline from Life & Style in February 2014 a little unnecessary?
“LONGORIA SAYS CHILDREN ARE ‘NOT ON THE HORIZON'”
I never liked Life & Style much anyway.
Happy to say, that story was just a clip leading me to OceanDrive.com which scored the actual interview and published it in March 2014 after Eva’s 39th birthday. Their headline makes sense:
“LONGORIA LIKE YOU’VE NEVER SEEN HER”
But, peek up there in your browser window. What an interesting URL:
Sigh. It’s a really good article that gets into her graduate studies, career and active support for President Obama. No matter. The pertinent section of Eva’s lengthy interview is apparently just three sentences of old news:
“Having children of her own, she says, ‘is not on the horizon right now, so it’s not something I think about.’ Has she ever had a desire for kids? ‘Oh, of course, when I was married.'”
The baby-watchers seem to be sliding Ms. Longoria into the media’s old Jennifer Aniston slot. Not a fun place to be. Let’s move on to Lucy Liu.
In May 2013, she acknowledged that she’s talked publicly of wanting kids, saying: “It just hasn’t happened yet.” She hinted in that interview that she’s open to single motherhood at some point as well. Ms Liu turned 45 in December 2013. For now, she’s joins the list with Eva.
