Mavis Staples, 74, is a legendary gospel singer, perhaps best known for ’70s hits Respect Yourself and I’ll Take You There (with The Staples Singers). Or, maybe you were rocking to her soulful appearance on The Daily Show in June.
Just FYI, Ms. Staples has been added to the list of Famous NotMoms. She recently explained to Time magazine that she did consider Momhood during her brief marriage years ago. But, her husband (um, ex-husband) insisted that a good wife and mother needs to stay at home . That didn’t go over well.
Time: “Did you want a family?”
Mavis: “I love children. When I got ready to have my family, my husband – you know how it goes – he wanted me to come off the road. I said, ‘Why would you ask me to do that?’ I decided I’d rather him go than stop singing.”
