My favorite holiday is on the horizon. I love everything about Halloween; from the falling leaves and cool weather to the candy and costumes. Yes, I do not have children and yes, I still dress up for Halloween. It may be the one night a year I purposefully allow humans under the age of 16 near my home. And, also yes, I am that person who dresses up my cat. In fact, one year all three of us were Pilgrims. That was awesome.
You don’t have to have kids to enjoy this festive day. I thought I might round up some great costumes for NotMoms to celebrate women without children, from current day to historical archetypes. Depending on the audience, a powerful woman might be the scariest costume of all.
- Queen Elizabeth I. Liz One’s gown and accessories are very recognizable. Throw on an elaborate Elizabethan gown and collar, use light-toned powder on your face, and you have an instant queen costume. You could go for the Cate Blanchett or the Dame Judi Dench looks depending on your mood.
- Oprah Winfrey. Why not dress up as the queen of media? Oprah has always been a fashion icon as much as she has been a role model for modern childfree women. Without a pre-made costume option, this will require some creativity. The right wig, a skirt, amazing shoes and a sweater (padded?) should get the point across. You can even carry a microphone.
- Sally Ride. A costume to honor the first American woman in space would be easy to put together with store-bought pieces. Orange sweat pants and sweatshirt are better than “sexy astronaut” costumes you might find in a store, though appropriately serious costumes do exist.
Greek Goddesses: Artemis or Athena. While Greek mythology is full of gods and mortals giving birth to all manner of things, a few goddesses stayed out of the baby game. Virgin goddesses Artemis and Athena would both make very recognizable costumes. Artemis is the goddess of hunters. She wore a short chiton, or traditional Greek tunic, and carried a bow and arrow. Athena was the warrior goddess and dressed in gold armor.
Frieda Kahlo. Another very recognizable NotMom, Frieda rocked brightly colored clothing and a signature unibrow. Scarves, a full skirt, elaborate gold jewelry, black eyebrow pencil, and flowers in your hair will be all you need.
What costume ideas do you have for this Halloween?
